In the Spotlight: Can We Live under His Shade?
by Heba Rushdan
Can We Live under His Shade? This is a question you might ask yourself when you hear about a series called “Under His Shade”. The first session started with a wonderful Quranic recitation by brother Abdul Kareem saying, “He is Allah”, “He is Allah”, “He is Allah”. Hearing this, your heart starts beating faster; is it due to fear; is it because of love; or is it born from a passion to know more? Surely, it is due to all of these reasons and more. (More)

Fasting the Day of 'Ashura'
by AElfwine Mischler
'Ashura' commemorates the day that Allah saved the Children of Israel from Pharaoh.

Fasting on Muharram 10, known as the Day of 'Ashura', expiates for the sins of the past year. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) arrived in Madinah in 622 CE, he found that the Jews there fasted on Muharram 10 and asked them the reason for their fasting on this day. They said," This is a blessed day. On this day Allah saved the Children of Israel from their enemy (in Egypt) and so Prophet Musa [Moses] fasted on this day giving thanks to Allah."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "We are closer to Musa than you are." (More)

Did You Try to...
Make a habit of making dhikr (remembrance of Allah) and istighfaar (asking Allah for forgiveness):

Ibn al-Qayyim is reported to have said: "There is no doubt that the heart becomes covered with rust, just as metal dishes - silver, and their like - become rusty. So the rust of the heart is polished with dhikr, for dhikr polishes the heart until it becomes like a shiny mirror. However, when dhikr is abandoned, the rust returns; and when it commences then the heart again begins to be cleansed. Thus the heart becoming rusty is due to two matters: sins and neglecting remembrance of Allah (swt). Likewise, it is cleansed and polished by two things : istighfaar and dhikr."

"... Without doubt in the remembrance of Allah [dhikr] do hearts find satisfaction." -- [13:28] (The Meanings Of The Holy Qur'an by Abdullah Yusuf Ali)

Book Review:
Islam: A Short History
by Ahmed Khalil
Karen Armstrong is an English author who writes on Judaism, Christianity, Islam and Buddhism. She has been influential in conveying the more objective post-19th-century scholarship of Islam to a wide readership in Europe and North America. Armstrong is a former nun. With her powerful scholarship, you would expect this book to be thorough and full of information. The book definitely lives up to that expectation. What you wouldn't expect is for it to be in 270 mostly painless pages, easy to read and follow. (More)

Hadith:
Abu al-Darda` narrates that he heard the Prophet (PBUH) say, "There is nothing in the balance heavier than good morals. Indeed the person of good morals will reach by them the rank of the person of fasts and prayers."
[reported by at-Tirmidhi]

Quranic Verse:
We send down (stage by stage) in the Qur'an that which is a healing and a mercy to those who believe; to the unjust it causes nothing but loss after loss.
-- [17:82] (The Meanings Of The Holy Qur'an by Abdullah Yusuf Ali)

Interpretation: Allah tells us that His Book, which He has revealed to His Messenger Muhammad , the Qur'an to which falsehood cannot come, from before it or behind it, (it is) sent down by the All-Wise, Worthy of all praise, is a cure and a mercy for the believers, meaning that it takes away whatever is in their hearts of doubt, hypocrisy, Shirk, confusion and inclination towards falsehood. The Qur'an cures all of that. It is also a mercy through which one attains faith and wisdom and seeks goodness. This is only for those who believe in it and accept it as truthful, it is a cure and a mercy only for such people. As for the disbeliever who is wronging himself by his disbelief, when he hears the Qur'an, it only makes him further from the truth and increases him in his disbelief.
-- The Interpretation of Ibn Kathir [Tafsir Ibn Kathir].
